About the size of a robin, the American Kestrel is the smallest falcon in North America. It lives in a variety of habitats including open fields, deserts, parks and suburbs. It's often seen on telephone wires near highways. A kestrel hunts by hovering in mid-air or watching from a perch until it sees prey it can dive upon. It feeds mainly on insects during summer months and small rodents and birds in winter.

Barn Swallows are found throughout North America and commonly nest in barns and other man-made structures. Their forked tails make them easy to identify as they capture a variety of crop-destroying insects in mid-flight. Farmers usually welcome these summer visitors to their barns where the swallows build mud and straw nests. In winter, they migrate to Central and South America.

This yellow-breasted bird is found on prairies and open grasslands across the Central United States, and is named for its song. It gathers in large flocks and feeds on a variety of insects, grains and seeds. The female dickcissel is often confused with sparrows. Small cup-shaped nests are built from a variety of grasses, frequently at ground level. Mowing of grassy fields can destroy large numbers of nests.

The Eastern kingbird is aggressive by nature, and will attack hawks and other large birds near its nest. It captures insects in mid-air, but also feeds on berries and fruits.

Their long legs allow them to run quickly across the ground and catch fast-moving insects. Killdeer parents will pretend they have a broken wing or are injured in order to lure predators away from their nest.

Snow Buntings are found across the tundra and along arctic shorelines during summer months. In winter, they head south to the northern U.S. and Canada. Well-adapted to life in frigid temperatures, Snow Buntings will burrow into the snow to keep warm. They can often be seen in large flocks, feeding on seeds, insects and caterpillars. Shoreline birds also feed on small crabs or snails.
