This game bird is the state bird of California. They have black throats circled in white and black plumes (males) on the top of their heads. Most of their time is spent at ground level, seeking out vegetation, seeds and nuts. It is not uncommon to see large groups, or coveys, of close to 100 of these WatchList birds. Nests are usually hidden at ground level, but may be made in trees.

Found primarily in the southeastern portion of the United States, these quails prefer dense grass and brush or, occasionally, open woods. Their brown feathers blend in well with dry grasses at ground level. They are usually found in larger groups, or coveys, where birds band together for safety. This species eats a variety of seeds, insects and other bugs. Habitat loss is causing their numbers to greatly decline in some areas.

These attractive game birds, introduced to the United States from their native range in Asia, have beautifully patterned brown feathers, long tails and shiny green heads. It is the state bird of South Dakota, and occurs over much of the northern half of the United States. Most of their time is spent at ground level, eating plants, seeds and some insects. Nests are generally made on the ground. Fast running and quick take-offs occur when the birds are approached.

The Ruffed Grouse is the state bird of Pennsylvania and is found in northwestern areas and eastern mountains of the United States. Males attract females by raising their tail feathers, puffing up their neck feathers and making a low sound by drumming the air with their wings. Insects, berries and a variety of seeds and nuts make up their diet.

With its unmistakable gobble and huge size, it's difficult to confuse the Wild Turkey with any other bird. Averaging 16 pounds, they are the largest game birds in North America and are found across much of the United States. Wild Turkeys prefer forest habitats where they forage for plant material, seeds, insects and even small amphibians. Males use their huge tail feathers for display.

The Willow Ptarmigan is the state bird of Alaska. During winter months, its brown plumage changes to snow white. White feathers even cover the feet, providing extra warmth and winter camouflage from predators. During summer the Arctic bird feeds on flowers, leaves and insects. Twigs and buds make up the winter diet. Males defend their nests fiercely.
