CALIFORNIA CONDOR $8.00 This endangered bird is the largest in North America, and has a wingspan that stretches over nine feet. Despite its large size, it has weak talons and cannot carry anything while in flight. Condors are carrion eaters; they never attack or kill living animals. At one time, the only living condors were in zoos. Today, breeding programs have tried to introduce this magnificent bird back into the wild. In Stock? |

IVORY-BILLED WOODPECKER $8.00 So rare, it is held with mystical regard by bird lovers across America. Thought to be extinct since 1880, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker was rediscovered in the "Big Woods" of eastern Arkansas in Feb 2004. This is one of the largest such birds in the world, thought to have a life-span of around 15-20 years. The great ornithologist Roger Tory Peterson called it "A whacking big bird," because at nearly two feet long, possessing a three-foot wingspan and a pterodactyl crest of black and white with a streak of red, it is an awe-inspiring bird. They are recognizable by their enormous ivory-colored bills and their unique way of "double knocking" the tree trunk as they forage for beetle larvae and insects. In Stock? |
