These tiny sparrows are found throughout much of the United States and Canada in a variety of habitats. They are known for their familiar chipping sound. They prefer to nest in trees, but may make their nests in shrubs quite close to human homes . Seeds, insects and caterpillars make up their diet.

These round, fluffy-looking birds are found in Canada and throughout the United States. They are relatively common in forested areas as well as at backyard feeders. Juncos are often seen hopping along the ground alone or in small groups. They eat seeds, berries, insects and some fruit. Their nests are constructed from grasses and built in the trees or on the ground in sheltered areas.

This is the smallest woodpecker found in North America. It is common throughout much of the United States and Canada, and can often be seen around dead trees or telephone poles. Like other woodpeckers, it taps its beak like a drum as a territorial display. It eats a variety of insects and their larvae, and some berries and seeds. Birdfeeders with suet or peanut butter also attract this woodpecker.

This secretive bird is found across the eastern half of the United States. Its western counterpart, the Spotted Towhee, is similar in appearance. It is found in wooded areas, thickets and dense brush, where it forages for food. Though usually seen at ground level, the male towhee will perch in the open to sing his songs. The towhee feeds on a variety of insects, fruits, seeds and small salamanders.
