| Add Gallic grace notes to your vocabulary with these witty, informative Knowledge Cards! One side of each card gives a French phrase that's used by English speakers; a phonetic pronunciation helper; and a sentence or two in which the phrase appears. The other side has a direct translation and a definition of the phrase as it is used in English. Look at the front and figure out--from memory, context, or inference--what the phrase means; check your accuracy on the back. You may understand perfectly what au pair means. But if you're like most of us, you may not pronounce it correctly. To supplement the phonetic helpers (e.g., o pehr), you'll find a card with notes on the principles of French pronunciation. You'll be talking like a Parisian in no time. |
The pantheon of writers, revolutionaries, scientists, artists, reformers, and politicians featured in this deck of Knowledge Cards illustrates over 1,500 years of Irish history, culture, and achievement---from the fifth-century Saint Patrick to the Jacobite Patrick Sarsfield to Neil Jordan, director of the 1992 hit movie 'The Crying Game.' One side of each card presents a quotation by a noted Irish figure, identified only by the title and date of the work from which it derives or the circumstances in which it was spoken; the other side identifies the writer or speaker and provides a brief biographical sketch. Thus, you can use these cards as a quiz deck on Irish letters or simply as an introduction to forty-eight of the most remarkable individuals that Ireland ever produced. |

| Typography is a bubbling ferment in which venerable, conservative, and highly readable typefaces (and their descendants) mix with bizarre, sometimes over-the-top display fonts. This deck of 48 cards gives you a full specimen of a given typeface (upper- and lowercase alphabets, numbers, special characters) on one side of each card. On the other side are succinct and knowledgeable notes about the designer who created the face, random and relevant history, observations on design minutiae, apt comparisons with other faces, and the occasional restrained backhand to episodes of typographical folly. Witty, accurate, and deeply informed, these Knowledge Cards provide an absorbing entree to the noble art of typographic design. | This deck of 48 Knowledge Cards offers a concise illustrated history of the civil rights movement and a chance to make the acquaintance of many brave, brilliant people. Each card has a photo of an important event or person on one side and a brief biography or account on the other. From legally sanctioned segregation--which wasn't limited to the Deep South--to Freedom Riders rolling into the country of white rage; from Brown v. Board of Education to Rosa Parks; from Dr. King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference to the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, these cards tell the story of a turbulent era and a proud achievement. Published with The Library of Congress. |
