The 48 puzzles in this deck aren't garden-variety cryptograms, solvable by figuring out their systems of letter substitutions. Instead, they substitute entirely new alphabets--geometric forms; extraterrestrial-looking squiggles, animal silhouettes. To unlock their wry, funny, or insightful messages, you must begin by deducing (for instance) that the bear-shape means 'g' or that a one-eyed space alien has to be an 'h.'

Don't be daunted by these strange and brilliant puzzles. Each message comes with a plain-English clue to its writer's identity. Once you've matched the correct letters to the author's name, the puzzle will begin to give up its secret. (And if it doesn't, look on the card's reverse for a full solution!)
World War II pitted the most powerful armies on earth against one another in an armed conflict that spanned the globe and profoundly shaped world history. Seventy nations fought and more than seventy million people died in history’s deadliest conflagration. From Pearl Harbor to D-Day, Hiroshima to the Holocaust—this deck of forty-eight cards will test your knowledge of the war’s battles, leaders, alliances, and strategies. The front of each card shows a date and place and asks “What Happened Here?” The answer on the back provides concise and insightful information on one key aspect of the conflict. Reading alone, or as part of a multiplayer history challenge, you’ll learn all about the war that began even before Germany’s invasion of Poland in 1939 and ended with Japanese surrender aboard USS Missouri on September 2, 1945.

These 48 fact-filled Knowledge Cards are a great source of condensed information—all in a deck the size of a pack of playing cards.

People have been inventing constellations--shapes made by mentally connecting the astral dots--for at least 6,000 years. Celestial landmarks that provide mnemonic assistance to astronomers, farmers, and sailors, contemplating the constellations offers simple, quiet pleasure to the rest of us.

This collection of Knowledge Cards presents a concise, informative look at 46 star groups. Each card has a chart of the featured constellation on the front; its position and area, brightest star and number of visible constituent stars, zodiac sign, and notes about its origin and history on the reverse. One card is a glossary of astronomical terms; another gives general information about the heavens. A great way to learn to navigate the night sky.
This deck of 48 cards presents superb, full-color images of North American wildflowers by photographers Elwood Jones and Doug Sherman. Taxonomic information and notes on the flowers' natural history and distribution appear on the back of each card.

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center has worked since 1982 to expand our knowledge of native wildflowers and our appreciation of their significance in our regional ecologies, landscapes, and cultures. Compiled by the Wildflower Center's staff, this deck will enlighten the budding botanist and delight anyone with an eye for nature's visual glory.

There is order in the mathematical universe, but it can be hard to find. The orderly solutions to these abstruse, obscure, arcane, and delightful hairpullers run and hide in the bushes like rodents of the rainforest. The New York Times has covered the events of the sports world for well over a century. Its pages have captured the suspense and tumult of the game--whatever it happens to be--evoking the euphoria, despair, and wry humor that attend any hard-fought competition. Beyond the recitation of scores and stats, the paper has offered rich background and keen analyses of the converging circumstances, wild twists of fate, and wilder personalities that absorb us in our sport of choice.

This deck of 48 cards takes the form of a sports history quiz, asking the reader to name important athletes, events, locales, and scores of the past hundred years. Along with the answer to its question, the back of each card presents an excerpt from a contemporary New York Times account.
